Team member expectations
- I'm at my best when: I have plenty of heads-down project work time, but can ping someone for quick Zoom sessions to discuss ideas. I also appreciate knowing when my work is well-received. I perform better if I can exercise twice a week and disconnect from work after a certain hour.
- My preferred place or format for one-on-ones: I think best [outside on a walk, by a whiteboard, ...], so can we have our one-on-ones there?
- Areas I want to develop: I'd love coaching on [...]
- Development discussions: I'd like to discuss progress towards my career goals [format] every [frequency].
- My preferred feedback style and cadence: I thrive on frequent positive reinforcement but also want to know where I can improve. I prefer timely and concrete feedback. The most effective way for me to receive it is [in person, over Slack, email, etc.] in a [direct, sandwiched, etc.] style.
Manager expectations
- Goal for one-on-ones broadly: I want these one-on-ones to make you feel supported and heard. You should leave feeling empowered to tackle your most pressing challenges, knowing I'm here to back you up. Please bring up any obstacles hindering your progress. We'll use these sessions to offer mutual encouragement, exchange feedback, and discuss your career growth at your preferred pace.
- My expectations of you: I expect you to set the agenda, keep your own notes, and manage follow-ups from our one-on-ones. While I'll contribute thoughts occasionally, the agenda is primarily yours to shape. Let's work together to establish the right frequency for in-depth feedback. Please provide weekly input on what you need more or less of from me.
- One of my weaknesses is: [...] so please point it out if you notice it happening
- Feedback from you: In each meeting, I'll ask what you need more or less of from me to better support you. I prefer to receive feedback in this way [...]
Our shared expectations

- Topics: Every [specific timeframe], we'll review goals in Development.
- Feedback: We'll give each other feedback in a [style] manner and [type] format.
- Wins: We'll celebrate wins by [specific method].
